Jane K. Carey 07/28/2016

Jane Katharine Carey (née Barr), age 92, died peacefully at her home July 28, 2016, surrounded by her children and her favorite son-in-law Charlie.  The daughter of John I. Barr, Sr. and Theresa Taylor Barr, Jane grew up in the Roxbury and Roslindale neighborhoods of Boston. After being graduated from the Teacher's College of the City of Boston, Jane enjoyed a long career as a primary grades teacher and reading specialist. She was a pioneer in exploring innovative teaching methods and training other educators at the Boardman and William Monroe Trotter Schools, the city's magnet school initiative. Upon retirement, Jane and her husband Jack made their home in Centerville. Jane volunteered in Hyannis teaching English as a second language and helped the homeless at the Salvation Army.

Jane is survived by her brother John I. Barr (Grace) of Quincy; her four children: Patricia Fitzgerald Merriell of Centerville, Theresa Fitzgerald (Charles McCarthy) of Roslindale, Kathleen Fitzgerald of Boston, and Michael Fitzgerald of Roslindale; grandchildren Elizabeth Carbone (Gene) of Barrington, NH, John David  Merriell (Amanda Witham) of Astoria, NY, and Alexander Franklin Merriell (Elizabeth) of Athens, OH; great grandchildren Katrina Carbone and Alex Carbone of Barrington, NH, and Ava Merriell of Athens, OH; a special niece, Nancy Donohue Becotte (Michael) of Chelmsford; her dear brother-in-law James Donohue (Mim) of S. Dennis; "daughters" Vivian Meranda of Jamaica Plain and Lora Ziemba (David) of Marstons Mills; cousins Claire Jolliffe (Howard) of Camden, Maine, and Audrey Chase of Pemaquid Beach, Maine; and best friends Maureen McGarry Aversa of West Roxbury and Dorothy Finkel of Centerville.  Jane will also be missed by many loving nieces and nephews.

Jane was preceded in death by her husband John P. Carey, and her first husband and the father of her children, William F. Fitzgerald; and her siblings Robert Barr, Mary Patricia Donohue, Thomas Barr, and Rosemary Doren Sampson.

At her request there will be no service. A private burial will take place at St. Joseph's Cemetery in West Roxbury. A memorial mass and reception will be announced for a later date. Jane loved nature and animals and had a particular love of turtles. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, Sea Turtle Project, 291 State Highway Route 6, South Wellfleet, MA 02663 or to the Visiting Nurse Association of Cape Cod, 255 Independence Drive, Hyannis, MA 02601. The family would like to thank VNA Hospice of Cape Cod for their loving care during Jane's final weeks.

Arrangements entrusted to Sperry & McHoul Funeral Home, 15 Grove St. North Attleboro

Jane and Jack were an inspiration to me to travel the world...and I continue to do so thanks to them!
Jane was a warm and gentle lady that I will always hold dear to my heart.
I finally made it down to the Cape to visit with Jane when I heard the news...I missed saying goodbye by a day.
Jane and Jack are now together exploring heaven!

I remember Jane and her deceased husband, Jack, fondly. I used to meet her on Centerbrook Lane where we live when she was walking her dog, Tinker. She would tell me about her travels and visits from family. I was always struck by her resilience. A few months ago, I was delighted to see her walking again down Centerbrook Lane. A true treasure.
